Educational guide, not legal or tax advice.
New York handles service of process differently from many states. A domestic New York LLC generally does not appoint a separate private registered agent in its Articles. The New York Department of State is the statutory agent for service of process.

What New York’s statutory agent means
The Department of State can receive service of process on behalf of a New York LLC and forward it to the address listed by the company. This is not the same as a commercial registered-agent subscription that scans mail, accepts routine correspondence, or sends compliance reminders.
The formation filing also asks for the county where the LLC’s office is located and an address where the Department of State should mail process copies.
Should I buy a registered-agent service?
It may be useful for privacy, reliable mail handling, or companies that do not want important documents sent to a home address. Before paying, check whether the provider is actually offering New York process forwarding, mail scanning, annual report reminders, or only a bundled formation package.
Registered agent FAQ
Does New York require me to name a registered agent company?
Usually no. The Department of State is the statutory agent for service of process for a domestic LLC.
Is the Department of State my complete mail service?
No. It is the statutory service-of-process channel. Keep the forwarding address current and review other official mail separately.
Does a registered-agent service form the LLC?
Not automatically. The LLC is formed by filing Articles of Organization.
