How to search a Missouri LLC name
- Search Missouri Secretary of State business records.
- Search exact names and close variants.
- Remove punctuation and LLC endings when checking similarity.
- Check plural and singular versions.
- Avoid restricted words unless approval rules can be met.
- Decide whether you need a fictitious name if operating under a different public name.
- Search federal trademarks before using the name as a brand.
Name reservation
Missouri’s fee schedule lists name reservation at $25 for most entities. The Secretary of State FAQ says an LLC name may be reserved for up to 60 days and renewed for two additional 60-day periods.
Reservation is optional. If you are ready to form the LLC, filing Articles of Organization is usually more direct.
Fictitious name
A Missouri fictitious name is similar to a DBA. The Secretary of State FAQ explains that a fictitious name is used when a person or entity transacts business under a name other than its true name. The fee schedule lists fictitious name creation, renewal, correction, or amendment at $7.
A fictitious name does not create a separate LLC and does not secure exclusive name rights.
