Who can serve
Missouri Secretary of State FAQ says the agent may be:
- An individual Missouri resident whose business office is identical with the registered office
- A corporation authorized to transact business in Missouri with a business office identical with the registered office
The registered office must be a real physical location where the registered agent may be served process. A PO Box can be listed only if a physical street address in the same city is also listed.
What the registered agent does
The registered agent is not the same as:
- Filing Articles of Organization
- Writing the operating agreement
- Getting an EIN
- Registering Missouri DOR tax accounts
- Registering unemployment tax account
- Filing local licenses
- Preparing tax returns
Privacy and reliability
If you act as your own registered agent, consider address privacy and availability. If you use a professional registered agent, review renewal fees, mail scanning, cancellation rules, and whether they help with registered office changes.
Missouri LLCs do not file a standard Secretary of State annual report, so do not buy registered agent service only because a provider implies annual report filing is always needed.
Registered agent FAQ
Can I be my own registered agent?
Often yes if you meet Missouri’s requirements and are comfortable with the address and availability tradeoffs.
Does registered agent service form the LLC?
No. The LLC is formed by filing Articles of Organization.
Does the registered agent file taxes?
No. Tax registration and tax returns are separate unless you hire a provider for those services.
