Educational guide, not legal or tax advice.
DC LLC name search should happen before you file the $99 formation document. The District’s entity-name rules, trade-name rules, domain availability, and trademark risk are separate checks.
Educational note: This guide is for general informational purposes only. It is not legal, tax, accounting, or financial advice. Confirm naming rules with DLCP and speak with a trademark attorney if brand risk matters.

DC LLC designator rules
DC Code requires a limited liability company name to contain one of the allowed company indicators. Common choices include:
- limited liability company
- limited company
- L.L.C.
- LLC
- L.C.
- LC
Most small businesses use “LLC” because it is simple for banks, tax accounts, contracts, and customers.
Search beyond exact availability
Check:
| Search | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| DC business records | Avoids immediate entity-name conflict |
| Trade name records | Trade names can conflict with operating names |
| Domain availability | Needed for web and email |
| Social handles | Important for public-facing brands |
| USPTO trademark search | Entity name availability does not clear trademark risk |
Trade name is different
DLCP’s FAQ says a trade name is optional, but if a business uses a name other than its registered corporate, LLC, or partnership name in DC, it must register that trade name.
Example: Anacostia Design Studio LLC may operate as Ward 8 Creative. The LLC name and trade name are different records.
Name reservation
Name reservation is optional. DLCP’s LLC fee schedule lists reservation or transfer of name at $50.
If you are ready to form, it is often simpler to file the LLC rather than reserve the name first. Reservation is useful when you need time before formation.
Common name mistakes
Thinking a trade name forms the LLC
It does not. The LLC is formed through the domestic LLC formation filing.
Ignoring the LLC designator
The legal entity name needs an allowed LLC indicator.
Assuming domain availability means legal clearance
Domain registration and entity-name availability are separate.
Using the brand name before checking trademarks
Trademark conflicts can be expensive after logos, ads, and contracts are already in use.
