What the registered agent does
DLCP’s FAQ says the registered agent is responsible for forwarding process, notices, demands, and other government correspondence to the entity at the address the entity provided.
This is not a decorative filing field. If a lawsuit or government notice is sent to the agent, slow forwarding can create real consequences.
Commercial vs noncommercial agent

If a foreign entity acts as registered agent, DLCP’s FAQ says it must be registered with the Corporations Division.
Address and privacy
A commercial registered agent can help avoid using an owner’s home address as the service address, but it does not replace every other address or licensing requirement. DC licensing, tax registration, certificate of occupancy, and home occupation permit rules can still ask for physical business location information.
Agent service vs formation service
Registered agent service is not the same as forming the LLC. A provider may charge one fee to be the registered agent and a different fee to file the $99 formation document.
When comparing companies, separate:

Common mistakes
Letting agent information go stale
DLCP says entities must maintain a registered agent to stay active and in good standing.
Assuming the agent handles the biennial report

Choosing based only on price
The agent must reliably forward time-sensitive legal documents.
Confusing agent address with business license location
The registered agent address does not automatically satisfy BBL, occupancy, zoning, or tax-location rules.
